Liberty Theater Workshop
Presents Xanadu

Xanadu is a campy, self-aware jukebox musical based on the 1980 film starring Olivia Newton-John, but reimagined with sharp satire and over-the-top humor. With a book by Douglas Carter Beane and a score featuring songs by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar (including hits from Electric Light Orchestra and Newton-John), the show playfully transforms what was once a critically panned movie into a vibrant, roller-disco comedy.

The story centers on Clio, the youngest of the nine Muses, who descends from Mount Olympus in 1980s Venice Beach, California. Disguising herself as “Kira,” an Australian roller-skating muse with legwarmers, she sets out to inspire Sonny Malone, a frustrated chalk artist who dreams of creating something truly great. Clio encourages Sonny to think big, and together they imagine “Xanadu”—a magical venue where all forms of art can come together in a roller disco paradise.

Complications arise when Clio starts breaking the sacred Muse rules. She not only inspires creativity but also falls in love with Sonny, something that is strictly forbidden. Meanwhile, her jealous sisters Melpomene and Calliope plot to curse her, hoping to see her banished to the Underworld. Their scheming adds an extra layer of chaos as Clio tries to balance her divine responsibilities with her growing feelings for Sonny.

The musical playfully references both Greek mythology and 1980s pop culture, poking fun at the cheesiness of the original movie while celebrating its energy and music. Numbers like “I’m Alive,” “Magic,” “Evil Woman,” “Suddenly,” and “All Over the World” keep the energy high, while the finale, “Xanadu,” bursts into a glitter-filled celebration.

Ultimately, Zeus allows Clio to remain with Sonny, and together they embrace the joy of creativity, love, and unapologetic silliness. The show ends as it began—with roller skates, disco lights, and a wink at the audience, reminding everyone not to take art—or life—too seriously.

Premiering on Broadway in 2007, Xanadu turned what was once a notorious flop into a critically praised musical, earning multiple Tony Award nominations and delighting audiences with its mix of parody, romance, and dazzling roller-disco spectacle.
